a single man earning the average wage in his working life and retiring in 2010 at age 65 will have paid $294,000 in lifetime Social Security taxes and can expect to receive $265,000 in lifetime Social Security benefits.* Not what you’d call a heckova deal.

The Under-30s Should Demand an Opt Out of Social Security - Yahoo! News

Yeah, social security is a bit of a disaster.

Chicago public school bans lunches brought from home

Ugh, this is ridiculous insanity. It’s another reason why we need school vouchers - because public schools have the power to impose idiocy, and parents who can’t afford to send their children to private school have no choice but to accept it.

From article,

“Principal Elsa Carmona said her intention is to protect students from their own unhealthful food choices…”

Really? This sound like it’s more about control than choice and having a state-run, tax-payer funded school usurp the parents and what they see fit for their children. The best part of this article is near the end when a senior researcher at the Washington-based Center for Consumer Freedom asks, “Would the school balk if the parent wanted to prepare a healthier meal?”  Furthermore, there are many CPS children who do not qualify for the free or reduced-price meal programs, which means that the tax-payers - who have NO CHOICE in determining where their child goes to school - will be forced to pay $2.25 a day per child for the entire school year. According to the CPS website, there are 221 school days in one academic year, not counting days off and holidays (1). What this basically means is that if a parent sends a child to Ms. Carmona’s school, they will be giving them an extra $497.25 per year. There are a total of 1,304 public schools in Chicago ranging from public elemetary schools to high schools and there are a total of 855,286 children in those schools (2). Let’s do some quick math: if, the CPS were to implement such a program then they could very well make over $1.5 million a year if the vast majority of students didn’t qualify for free or reduced lunches. And, if you take into consideration the miserable economy of Chicago and it’s huge tax burden, I foresee this hypothetical becoming a reality.

Brothels to Nevada: Please Tax Us

unlike most industries, Nevada’s prostitution industry has long wanted to pay taxes, hoping that contributing to the state’s coffers will help legitimize the seedy industry.

Lawmakers have been bashful about bringing ‘that money’ into the mix…Anytime prostitution is brought up, it attracts a media frenzy drowning out the serious work they’re doing.

Yes, they should pay taxes, and politicians should get over themselves.
